The Ara Pacis Augustae commonly shortened to Ara Pacis is an altar to Peace, envisioned as a Roman goddess. It was commissioned by the Roman Senate on 4 July 13 BC to honor the triumphal return from Hispania and Gaul of the Roman emperor Augustus, and was consecrated on 30 January 9 BC by the Senate to celebrate the peace established in the Empire after Augustus’s victories. The altar was meant to be a vision of the Roman civil religion. It sought to portray the peace and fertile prosperity enjoyed as a result of the Pax Augusta (Latin, “Augustan peace”) brought about by the military supremacy of the Roman empire, and a visual reminder of the Julio-Claudian dynasty that was bringing it about.

During the Eighties, the first systematic restoration work began on the Altar. It was dismantled and several of the iron pivots supporting the projecting parts of the reliefs were substituted; fractures in the mortar were repaired, the restoration work that had already taken place was consolidated, the non-original parts were recoloured, and, naturally, the dust and deposits that had collected over the years were removed. It was during this work that the head now recognised as belonging to Honour, which had been mistakenly inserted into the Aeneas panel, was removed.

The Great Synagogue of Rome is the largest synagogue in Rome.

Apart from Jerusalem, which has been the holiest city in Judaism and the spiritual centre of the Jewish people since tenth century BC, Rome is the sity of hte next longest continuous Jewish habitation in the world.

Designed by Vincenzo Costa and Osvaldo Armanni, the synagogue was built from 1901 to 1904 on the banks of the Tiber, overlooking the former ghetto. The eclectic style of the building makes it stand out even in a city known for notable buildings and structures. This attention-grabbing design was a deliberate choice made by the community at the time who wanted the building to be a visible celebration of their freedom and to be seen from many vantage points in the city. The aluminium dome is the only squared dome in the city and makes the building easily identifiable even from a distance. Commemorative plates honour the local Jewish victims of Nazi Germany and of a Palestine Liberation attack in 1982.

The synagogue celebrated its centenary in 2004. In addition to serving as a house of worship, it is also serves a cultural and organizational centre for la Comunità Ebraica di Roma (the Jewish community of Rome). It houses not only the offices of the Chief Rabbi of Rome as well as the Jewish Museum of Rome.

In the XVIII century it was the seat of various papal offices and since 1871 it became the seat of the Italian Senate. The Senate chamber was built in the courtyard of the old papal post office. Bernini was charged with designing the palace by Pope Innocent X; it was later chosen as headquarters of the pontifical courts and in 1870 became the seat of the Chamber of Deputies. At the beginning of the twentieth century it was decided to build a new section at the back of the seventeenth-century palazzo to accommodate the new assembly hall. Termini is the major train station in Rome with both local and international trains. Outside the station itself, in Piazza Cinqecento you will find the majority of buses necessary for tourists to get to the numerous attractions around Rome. The two underground lines, Metro A and Metro B both converge at Termini allowing for an easy change in direction. The station itself has undergone extensive renovation and remodelling, culminating in the distinctive architecture of the building and numerous shops and restaurants located inside. Tickets for both trains and buses can be bought at the station itself.

St. Patrick’s in Rome is an Irish National Catholic Church found in the centre of the city. This church is the home base of the Irish Augustinians here in Rome and also the vibrant Irish community which lives in the Eternal City. It is a welcoming place for both expatriates and vistors alike and the church holds mass in both English and Italian at different times during the day. Fleeing persecution in Ireland during the 1600’s, priests of the Augustinian sect were forced to come to Europe to train priests. They then took up residence in their present location in the Villa Ludovisi area in 1892. The church holds numerous weddings throughout the year for Irish couples wanting to marry in the Eternal City.

The other half is contained in Palazzo Corsini on the other side of the Tiber river. What distinguishes this gallery from the many others in Rome, is that the majority of the art work and pieces, have come from the private collections of Rome’s great families. The impressive collection of art, spans works from the 12th century right through to the 18th. Famous paintings on display include, Raphael’s portrait of La Fornarina and those by Carvaggio, Canaletto and Titian. The palazzo itself was designed for Pope Urban VIII, a member of the Barberini family and the crown jewel of the building itself is said to be the magnificent frescoed ceiling by Pietro da Cortona with the visual panegyric of the Allegory of Divine Providence and Barberini Power to glorify the papal Barberini family. There is a beautiful garden known as a ‘giardino segreto’ because it is hidden from view from the outside of the building.

Although Rome is not a city associated with famous operas and opera houses like Milan or Venice, there is a flourishing and critically-acclaimed movement taking place within the city. The best place to see this taking place is in the revered Teatro dell’Opera formally called Teatro Costanzi. The theatre, originally opened in November 1880, has held major works, including those never performed up until that time in Rome or even Italy, including La faniculla del West, Turandort and Il trittico by Giacomo Puccini; Parsifal by Richard Wagner, Francesca da Rimini by Riccardo Zandonai. The opera house itself, has undergone many restorations and modernizations, the final being in 1958, which saw the architect Marcello Piacentini radically altering the existing architectural style and designing the present facade, entrance and foyer. The stucco work was completely restored, the great proscenium arch strengthened, and a parquet floor of solid oak blocks laid to replace the previous one. The opera theatre does not only hold operas but also numerous ballets are put on throughout the year. Dress for the opera is expected to be smart but can be less formal than tuxedos and evening gowns if you prefer. Please be aware that although tickets are bought individually the majority of the seating is in boxes, and it is the norm that you end up sharing boxes with strangers. A night at the Roman opera house makes for an enriching and entertaining night out.
